Volbella, Voluma, and Vollure Explained

Have you been paying attention to the latest in facial filler updates? If so, you may have seen the cosmetic industry add quite a few fillers to the aesthetic arsenal against aging over the past few years. You may have also noticed that Juvederm is leading the pack in introducing new, exciting products. In just three years we have witnessed the addition of Voluma, Volbella, and just recently, Vollure.

How are they different and what does each do? Because the names are so similar, understanding their different uses can be confusing, but this post is designed to bring clarity to each product and what it can do for you!

HA Crosslinking 101

Every injectable that bears the Juvederm brand name is derived from the component Hyaluronic Acid (HA). HA is a substance which is critical for keeping your skin youthful, plump, and hydrated. To realize the difference between each Juvederm product, we must understand the science behind HA crosslinking.

To convert the hyaluronic acid molecules into a lasting, stable dermal filler, they must be cross-linked (or bonded) in a special method and suspended in a gel solution. The closer the cross-linking, the more HA molecules are concentrated and the thicker the consistency of the gel.

HA molecules come in different sizes and weights. When molecules of the same molecular weight are cross-linked they form a thin, medium, or thick gel; when molecules of the different molecular weight of HA are cross-linked, they form a dermal filler which can operate with properties of both a thin gel and a thick gel to some degree.

Hylacross and Vycross Technology

Juvederm fillers with highly crosslinked HA molecules with the same weight are said to have Hylacross technology, whereas Juvederm fillers made up of crosslinked HA molecules with different weights are said to have Vycross technology.

How a dermal filler is cross-linked makes a small, but critical difference in how these different dermal fillers aesthetically work. So, the difference between the older Juvéderm fillers (like Juvederm XC and Juvederm Ultra) and the newer Juvederm fillers (Volbella, Voluma, and Vollure) really lies in what areas they’re appriopriate to treat. Of course, there are also overlaps in what each dermal filler can treat.

For example, the fillers Juvederm XC and Juvederm Vollure are both suitable for the treatment of nasolabial folds. Both are great choices for smoothing marionette lines and smile lines as well as softening folds. But, Vollure’s high/low HA cross-linking gives it these unique advantages for treating the nasolabial folds:

  • Longer lasting than Juvederm XC (up to 18 months versus six to 12 months)
  • It spreads less readily than Juvederm XC
  • It can be injected deeper to smooth over more severe folds

These distinctions make Vollure a better option for some patients, but Juvéderm XC remains a better option for others. Because of the flexibility of treatment between different injectables, it’s important that your injector is well versed in dermal filler knowledge and technique.

The Difference Between Voluma, Volbella, and Vollure:

Now that we know the difference between Hylacross and Vycross technologies, let’s differentiate among Voluma, Volbella, and Vollure. Although each is a result of Vycross technology, their gels have a different coverage area, thickness, and strength.

  • Voluma is ideal for lifting the cheek area because of its thickness and durability
  • Volbella is perfect for smoothing delicate areas under the eyes and filling “smoker’s lines” because of its thin, delicate gel.
  • Vollure is a great injectable for the treatment of nasolabial folds combined traits of durability and even distribution.
